Our Services

UK Asylum Applications

What Is the UK Asylum Process?

If you’re already in the UK and fear persecution in your home country, you may be eligible to claim asylum. You must apply in person, such as at a port of entry or a designated UK reception centre—there is no asylum visa available to arrive in the UK specifically to claim asylum.

After applying, you’ll attend a screening appointment where your identity, background, and reasons for claiming asylum are recorded. If your claim is accepted, you’ll have a detailed asylum interview with a caseworker to assess your claim.

Am I Eligible to Claim Asylum?

You must demonstrate that you cannot safely live in any part of your home country due to fear of persecution based on:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Political opinion
  • Or belonging to a particular social group (such as sexual orientation or gender identity)

You must also have tried to seek protection in your home country—but failed or been unable to get it.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step Guidance

  1. Location: Make your claim in person at a port, Asylum Intake Unit, or removal centre.
  2. Screening Appointment: Provide basic information and your reasons for asylum.
  3. Asylum Interview: You’ll give your full account to a caseworker who decides your eligibility.
  4. Decision: If successful, you’ll be granted refugee status or humanitarian protection. If not, you can appeal.

Asylum Support: What to Expect While You Wait

During the decision period, you may be eligible for Section 95 support, which includes:

  • Housing, often in shared or dispersed accommodation
  • A weekly allowance via an ASPEN card to cover basic essentials
  • Additional support may be available under Section 96 for specific needs

Appeals, Refusals & Complex Cases: We Can Help

Asylum cases are complex, and refusals or delays are common. Haleys can guide you through:

  • Reviewing refusals and lodging appeals or fresh claims
  • Preparing for tribunal hearings or judicial review
  • Advising on rights such as the ability to work after extended delays (e.g., more than 12 months)
